Student FAQs and Troubleshooting

WATCHING THE COURSE

Is there a mobile app available?

Yes! You can use the free Teachable app to watch your courses on a phone or tablet. Your course progress syncs across the app and web browser, so you can switch between devices and pick up where you left off.

How to get started

  1. Download the app: Get the "Teachable online courses" app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Sign in: Use the same email address you use to login to our school. Teachable will email you a one-time verification code to complete the login process.
  3. Select our school: Choose Layne Johnson Studio from your list of schools.
  4. Open your course: Select the course you want to access from your course library.

Can I watch the course without an internet connection?

Yes, with the Teachable app and you can download course content and keep learning wherever you are, even without data or an internet connection. Your progress syncs automatically between devices once you’re back online.

Can I download the course videos?

The course videos are intended to be viewed through the online school and cannot be downloaded directly to your computer. Downloadable PDFs, supply lists, reference photos and other course resources may be saved for your personal use.

I'm having trouble viewing the videos. What should I do?

Typically, problems with videos are related to your browser or an internet connection issue.

Here are some quick fixes:

  • Refresh the page and restart the browser
  • Restart your device
  • Open the lesson in a private or incognito browser window
  • Try a different browser – we recommend Chrome or Firefox
  • Test another website or video to determine whether the internet connection is the issue.
  • Clear browser cache (Ctrl+Shift+Delete on Windows, Command+Shift+Delete on Mac)
  • Temporarily disconnect from a VPN, if one is being used
  • Disable any ad blocker extensions
  • Video playback can be affected by the speed and stability of your internet connection. If the video pauses frequently, lower the video quality using the gear icon in the player.

If you're using Firefox: Make sure privacy settings are set to "Standard" – strict settings can cause video issues.

If you are still having trouble, please email hello@laynejohnson.com with a description of the problem and we will work on resolving the issue.

SHARING AND COPYRIGHT

Can I share the course material?

A lot of time, expense, thought and care went into creating all the material for these courses and sharing any of its copyrighted course content online or elsewhere is prohibited.

The course material is intended only for those individuals who have enrolled and paid for the courses in the school. Thanks for understanding!

Can the painting I do in this course be sold or exhibited?

A painting completed by following one of Layne’s course demonstrations should be considered a study of his original work. Because the composition and design are Layne’s copyrighted creative property, the course painting should not be sold, reproduced as prints or products, or entered in competitions or exhibitions.

You are welcome to display your course painting in your home and share it on social media with appropriate credit.

Then take the techniques and principles you learned in the course and use them to create a new painting with your own reference, composition and creative decisions. That original painting will be uniquely yours.

How should I sign a painting completed in the course?

The best way to sign a painting that's copied from someone else's is: [Your name] after [Original artist's name]

For a longer explanation, Matthew Bird has a very thorough blog post on this topic (which I agree with): https://matthewbird.com/blog/2023/6/21/how-to-sign-a-workshop-painting
